FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where do you get ideas?

It’s always a challenge to answer that because ideas pop in and out of my head like fireflies blinking on a hot August night. You see them - then you don’t… In my experience ideas find me - I don’t find them. Sure, I will sit and “think” to try and solve a story problem or come up with something new - but more often I find that ideas stumble into my path when I’m not looking for them. That’s why I always carry a drawing book with me when I’m out in the world.

Is writing a book hard?

Hmmm. YES on days when I feel like it’s the most impossible thing in the world and NO on days when I feel like I can fly! Okay. I can’t fly. But there are so many things that go into writing a book that some days I do get to feel that the “writing” part is a magical thing. On those days I can close my eyes and the words just flow into my head and out of my characters’ mouths - and other days it is a hard-fought battle with my evil nemesis, “Self-Doubt-O”.  And sometimes I need a nap.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I was always making up stuff. But when I was in the 4th grade I wrote my first “story” and remember feeling like that was fun. And I went through high school and even college writing stories and comedy sketches. So I was always a “writer”. After college I started writing TV stuff but I didn’t write my first book until after I became  a dad and saw the joy on my son’s face when we read books together.

Can you teach me to draw cartoons?

Yes! My doodles all begin with simple shapes that you already know how to  draw.   CLICK HERE - to see what I mean!

What other strange things can you tell us?

Well, I’m not allowed to tell you about the alien abduction or that time I conquered Rome dressed as a sheep - but this cartoon might be true.
